I took a long break and contemplated a complete restart. That came in very handy with Midnight Shadows. Not only do these diaries help massively with character and world building, they are excellent resources for figuring out where the game is up to after some time away. You can pinpoint where someone is up to in their life with a diary.īoth Yomawari: Midnight Shadows and Forgotton Anne have their protagonists (Haru and Anne respectively) record their journeys in the form of diaries. A record of a person’s innermost and private thoughts, a diary describes a person’s journey from place to place, both in an emotional and physical sense. For its appearance, for the running battle with the remaining Crystal Sage and all the good PVP that goes down there.Ĭhronicles of thoughts and feelings – Yomawari: Midnight Shadows and Forgotton AnneĪ diary is a valuable thing. Every Souls game has an Archive/Library, but the Grand Archives is my favourite. While I’m here, I want to shout out to the Grand Archives of Dark Souls III. Again, I barely used any of them, but I wanted to track down each text – simply for the love of finding them. It was a further joy to find out there where additional ancient texts to be found about Lothric – Pyromancy tomes and Miracles. Love the artwork for the books and scrolls of Dark Souls III I work in a library and in the libraries basement there are old books (some in excess of a hundred years) and when I get the chance to happen upon one, turning those pages is a very special feeling – finding those scrolls elicited a similar response. My character was the first to encounter these scrolls in hundreds, possibly thousands of years. But, the feeling of finding these two ancient relics was unlike anything else I had experienced in a video game. I will fully admit that I have never used a spell off either of them – I’m strictly a melee guy. The two scrolls are the Sage’s Scroll and the Golden Scroll. Also, this is part of why I genuinely like Farron Keep – From Software’s poison swamps don’t get too much love. One of my fondest and clearest memories of playing Dark Souls III for the first time (as my first Souls game) was finding these scrolls. In amongst the toxic slop and hostile inhabitants, there are two ancient scrolls that detail magics of a time long since passed. The beginning of a love of video game archaeology started with literature – Dark Souls IIIīeyond the Crucifixion woods is Farron Keep, a godforsaken poison swamp. The coming together of literature and video games is a favourite combination of mine and with this piece, I’m going to talk about a few of my favourite implementations of literature in video games. That can something as simple decoration or a much deeper purpose – helping to tell the games story or revealing secrets and mechanics. And video games haven’t been shy about featuring books and scrolls within their worlds. But despite the disparity in time, literature and video games have more than a few things in common. Literature, in the form of books and scrolls is an ancient thing.
